My Advice to Creatives
You can be the most creative, talented, and skillful person, but without constant input, you cannot develop new ways of thinking or doing things. Being a lifelong learner is essential. If you seek inspiration from the same sources as everyone else, your work will soon resemble theirs. Instead, explore different perspectives—observe how flowers bloom, study window displays, and look at people's faces. Belief in your talent and creativity is important, but without input, there can be no output. In this digital age, ignorance is inexcusable. Everything is at our fingertips. Want to learn something? Go to the internet. When you continually learn and observe, you generate fresh and better ideas.
Second, the comfort zone is poison. I always push myself to try something new—whether in different industries or areas of interest. Young talent must embrace the mindset of a beginner. This advice applies to everyone, not just young creatives. Be a beginner. You need curiosity, interest, and passion to do this.
Another piece of advice is to get out of your usual environment. Whether it’s your office, city, or country, changing your surroundings will offer you a new perspective. Explore different industries and experience various working methods. As Graham says, "Jack of all trades, master of none" is a myth. In today's world, we cannot afford to know or master only one thing. Sometimes, I find it hard to fit in because I have a bit of everything in me. But that also gives me a wide range of skills and solutions because I’ve experienced diverse backgrounds and worked with various people. This has added immense value to my life.
Finally, surround yourself with people who are better than you; don't aim to be the smartest person in the room. Meet people from different walks of life who can challenge you. Build your network with individuals who are better than you. Keep someone by your side who is more knowledgeable than you—that's crucial. Our circles shape and drive us. When my team asked why I was resigning from my job, I asked them if they wanted to be the smartest person in the room. Everyone said yes. I said I didn’t—and that was my reason.
I am in love with life and nature; we live in an amazing world with so much to learn, try, taste, see, and engage with. I am obsessively curious and have become like an intellectual tourist. Limited knowledge and interests create a limited life. If you want to expand your life, you must be hungry and curious. By constantly pursuing knowledge, hobbies, and new experiences, you will make your life much more interesting and ultimately become a more interesting person.
